The oil tanker, which was unable to drive due to engine damage, is still stuck in front of Rügen. The ship is to be brought to the sea area off Kaliningrad. The towing operation is expected to begin on Monday.

In the sea area north of Rügen, preparations for the towing of the Oil tanker “Yannis P.”, which can no longer move forward on its own after engine damage. As a spokeswoman for the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) announced, experts went on board on Saturday to inspect the ship. The relocation of the tanker is expected to begin on Monday.

“The captain of the tanker has confirmed that, according to current plans, the towing should start tomorrow,” said a spokeswoman for the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) on Sunday of the German Press Agency. The goal is the sea area off Kaliningrad. The tug “Britoil 71” was docked with the “Yannis P.” expected.

The oil tanker, which is a good 270 meters long, has been stuck about 20 kilometers north of Rügen for more than two weeks. The main engine could not be repaired with on-board resources, it said. The ship is still safely anchored outside of the shipping lanes, the spokeswoman said. According to earlier information from the authorities, the “Yannis P.” loaded with crude oil on the way from Russia to India.
