That would indeed be a thing: Rudi Völler, former team boss of the national team, is under discussion at the DFB as a candidate for the successor to Oliver Bierhoff, according to a “Bild” report. There is no clear denial from Völler himself.

In the search for a successor to the resigned national team director Oliver Bierhoff, Rudi Völler is said to be one of the candidates. This is reported by the “Bild” (Wednesday). “Basically, my life planning looks different,” Völler told the newspaper. The 62-year-old former DFB team boss had most recently worked as managing director of sports at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. Völler himself is a member of the task force at the German Football Association, which, after the World Cup debacle of the German national team from Qatar, is supposed to clarify the Bierhoff successor, among other things.

In addition to the 1990 world champion, the committee, headed by association president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke, also includes Bayern Munich’s long-time CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, his successor Oliver Kahn, ex-DFB sports director Matthias Sammer and the former RB-Leipzig -Managing Director Oliver Mintzlaff. The group is scheduled to meet again on January 19th.

Rudi Völler could help out the DFB for the second time

Völler could help the DFB for the second time in a difficult situation: After the botched EM 2000, he initially stepped in as team boss and placeholder for Christoph Daum and surprisingly led the DFB selection to the final at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. After the preliminary round at the EM 2004, he then resigned.

After the World Cup in Qatar, Bierhoff ended his position as director of the DFB. He had worked for the association for 18 years. Ex-national players such as Fredi Bobic, Sammer and Per Mertesacker have recently been traded as possible successors. Rummenigge explained in December that a job profile should first be drawn up.
