“Ruby, the Kraken teenager” is a young girl almost like the others

She is “krakante”. Ruby the teenage kraken by Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl, a new heroine from DreamWorks studios presented in preview at the Annecy Festival, is not a young girl quite like the others, but a bit nonetheless. Her mother overprotects her when she only dreams of adventures. She is bored in class and is secretly in love with a handsome boy. But an event will change her life: she learns that she descends from a line of warriors of the seas, a memory that will come back to her in a way that is as amusing as it is lively…

“We wanted to go back to the origins of the legends of sea monsters but in a fun way”, explains to 20 minutes co-director Faryn Pearl. That’s why Ruby’s rival is none other than a copper-haired mermaid reminiscent of Ariel, Disney’s Little Mermaid. “Originally, mermaids weren’t nice, but aquatic witches who lured sailors into their nets,” jokes Kirk DiMicco.

A rereading of marine legends

Humor is omnipresent in this comedy tinged with a nice ecological message. The greatest success of the film is Ruby herself, an adventurous young girl who discovers amazing powers and learns to master them. “She feels bad about herself like all girls her age, remembers Faryn Pearl. I thought back to my own adolescence to design it. The clumsy little girl is transformed into a responsible young woman in this very successful reinterpretation of timeless myths that will entertain the whole family.
