“Of course he lost” – DeSantis on Trump losing the election
To this day, Donald Trump claims he is the winner of the 2020 presidential election. His intra-party challenger for the next election no longer supports that narrative. “Of course he lost,” DeSantis said in an interview.
Dhe Republican election campaign is gaining momentum: Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, has admitted for the first time that ex-President Donald Trump had lost the 2020 presidential election. “Of course he lost,” DeSantis said in an interview with US broadcaster NBC. “Joe Biden is the President,” DeSantis said.
The 44-year-old had repeatedly dodged questions about Trump’s allegations that he had been cheated out of an election victory in 2020, although courts, electoral authorities and Trump’s then Attorney General had repeatedly stated that there was no credible evidence for Trump’s claims. Even in the NBC interview, DeSantis initially fled into generalities and said: “Whoever puts his hand on the Bible on January 20th every four years is the winner.” Only when asked did he become clear.
The 2020 presidential election wasn’t “the perfect choice,” the governor added. “I don’t think it was a well-managed election.” Among other things, DeSantis criticized the sharp increase in voting by post in the wake of the corona pandemic.
To this day, Trump claims without any evidence that he was deprived of his election victory through fraud. At the time, the Republican tried for weeks to subsequently overturn Biden’s election victory. Last week he was charged at the federal level in this connection. Trump, who wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election, is accused, among other things, of orchestrating a conspiracy against the state. He pleaded “not guilty”.
DeSantis is considered Trump’s greatest adversary in the Republican race for the presidency. In internal party polls, however, he is well behind the 77-year-old, who is leading the field.
