After a steady increase, the number of new corona infections has been going down slightly for a few days. Nevertheless, a third group now also has an incidence of over 2000.

The fourth wave of the corona pandemic continues to hit Germany at full speed. The current figures from the Robert Koch Institute give hope for a stabilization and even a slight decline, but they are still at the highest level. The situation continues to escalate, especially in the hotspots.

Overall, however, the number of new infections reported within one day has decreased slightly. According to the RKI, the health authorities reported 42,055 new infections yesterday. That is 2396 less than a week ago. A total of 6,158,125 people in Germany have been confirmed to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic. In fact, the number of unreported cases is likely to be considerably higher.

Incidence is falling – but not in the hotspots

The 7-day incidence, which represents the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in one week, continues to decrease slightly. It is 439.2 on Sunday morning. Yesterday the RKI reported an incidence of 442.7, on Sunday last week it was even 446.7. However, one should not assume that the situation will calm down. With Meißen, the third district has achieved an incidence of over 2000, while the Mittelachen district achieved a sad record with a value of 2208.5.

In fact, the numbers could be even higher, the RKI warned on Thursday. The RKI explained in its weekly report that part of the decline can also be explained by the intensified measures to reduce contact. However, it is to be feared that the massive increase in infections has simply overwhelmed the health system to such an extent that the reports do not follow. In some regions, the decline could “also be due to the increasingly overloaded capacities in the public health service and the exhausted laboratory capacities”, according to the RKI.
