The air over Germany is bubbling and heavy thunderstorms are threatening on Thursday and Friday. Cooler Atlantic air on muggy hot air over Central Europe.
In this tense mixture, a thunderstorm develops, which moves from France to us in Germany on Thursday. The result here is severe thunderstorms with a risk of heavy rain, heavy hail, hurricane gusts and even tornadoes.
Possible amount of rain until Friday evening
After the thunderstorms have passed, it will be noticeably cooler, especially in the north-west. The maximum values on Friday are mostly between 18 and 23 degrees. Along the Rhine it will be summery again with up to 27 degrees. There will be heavy showers and thunderstorms, especially in the east. Rainfall of 20 to 40 liters per square meter is expected in the northern half by Friday evening. A focus is expected in a strip from the Lower Rhine to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There could fall regionally 40 to 60 liters per square meter. Rainfall of 70 liters per square meter or even more is also possible locally! This amount of rain, which otherwise sometimes occurs in a month, falls mostly within a short time during thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday. The dried out soil can hardly absorb this amount of water. Locally there is a risk of flash floods!
There are also regionally 10 to 40 liters per square meter in the southern half. But as is so often the case with thunderstorms, it doesn’t hit everyone. There can also be places or regions that only get a few drops or even remain completely dry. Especially along the hotspots in NRW, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, places with very high and very low amounts of precipitation can be close together. Even one day before the threat of thunderstorms on Thursday, the different weather models still do not agree on exactly what amounts of precipitation will fall in which areas.
The weather will calm down for the time being over the weekend. Germany will then be under the influence of high pressure at times and will remain mostly dry. It will be hot again, especially in the west and south-west. However, this small high is not establishing itself as a blocking high-pressure system, as has been the case in recent weeks and has caused us to be dry for a long time.
The new week is changeable but summery warm
Already in the new week the first foothills of a low-pressure complex will reach the northwest over the British Isles. Then there is a threat of thunderstorms with heavy rain, especially in the northern half. It will also remain changeable in the following days. New deep spurs can always spread to us in Central Europe and always bring new showers and thunderstorms with them. The temperatures are usually in the summer range between 25 and 30 degrees.
