Alongside his heavily pregnant girlfriend, singer Rihanna, US rapper Asap Rocky has been in the spotlight in recent weeks. Now his arrest is making headlines. The charge: assault.
From the Caribbean island of Barbados to the police station in Los Angeles: US rapper Asap Rocky (33, “Praise the Lord”) was taken into custody by the police in California.
The arrest in connection with a shooting in November 2021 was made on Wednesday morning (local time) at Los Angeles Airport, police said. The musician is accused of assault using a weapon.
The rapper flew in on a private jet from the Caribbean island of Barbados on Wednesday, according to TMZ.com. There he had spent time with his heavily pregnant girlfriend Rihanna. The 34-year-old singer from Barbados is expecting her first child.
Dispute escalated: Rihanna’s friend allegedly involved
Asap Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, is considered a suspect in an incident on November 6 last year in Hollywood. According to the police, a dispute between two acquaintances had escalated, which ended with gun violence. One victim was slightly injured. The shooter and two companions left the crime scene on foot. The case will now be handed over to the public prosecutor, it said.
The bail was set at $550,000 (around €507,000), the Los Angeles Times reported. According to the newspaper, investigators searched the rapper’s home in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
The rapper, who grew up in the Harlem district of York, was convicted of assault in 2019 after a violent incident in Sweden. He was held in custody for around four weeks, but he managed to avoid a longer prison sentence. This was preceded by an argument in Stockholm in which the musician and two of his companions beat up a man on the street.
