The worry is coming to an end. The rescuers entered, Saturday afternoon, February 5, the tunnel which leads to the pocket where Rayan is. The 5-year-old child fell on Tuesday afternoon into a narrow and 32-meter deep well dug near the family residence in Ighrane, not far from the village of Bab Berred, in the province of Chefchaouen (extreme north of Morocco). The rescue operations, very delicate because of the risk of landslides, had caused a wave of concern throughout the world, from the Maghreb to Iraq, Yemen, Canada or the United States, in all languages.

The rescuers had tried in recent hours to send oxygen and water through tubes and bottles down to Rayan, without certainty that he could have used them.

The hand drilling of a horizontal tunnel of a few meters was progressing slowly in this deprived locality. The risk of landslide was indeed real on the rescue operation due to the nature of the ground at the site of the incident, some areas being rocky, others very sandy.

Thousands of people had come in recent days, some from afar, as a sign of solidarity. They camped there despite the freezing cold of this mountainous area of the Rif, located nearly 700 meters above sea level.
