Republican “Disaster”: Katie Britt’s cheeky lie

In her speech, MP Kate Britt made serious allegations against US President Joe Biden

It was supposed to be the big counterattack – and is now becoming a laughing stock. In her counter-speech to Joe Biden, Republican Katie Britt made blatant accusations against the president. Now it turns out: She used a bold ploy.

The Republican response to Joe Biden’s State of the Union address is becoming more and more of a talking point. The very appearance and presentation of the counter-speech given by the young MP Katie Britt was seen internally as a “disaster” (find out more here). Now it turns out: One of their most blatant allegations against the president simply has nothing to do with Biden.

It’s about the Republicans’ favorite topic: border security and illegal immigration. Britt used a dramatic story to highlight the Biden administration’s perceived failings. Britt says she spoke to a Mexican citizen who was kidnapped by the cartels at the age of twelve, raped and forced into prostitution. Your harsh accusation: Biden’s policies are directly responsible for this. The problem: The terrible story actually happened – but 20 years ago. And not even in the USA.

Attack on Biden

This was first discovered by journalist Jonathan Katz. In a Tiktok video published on Friday, he reports how he went looking for the young woman that Britt had already talked about in previous speeches. In fact, he found what he was looking for: Karla Jacinto Romero has already told her story several times, for example in 2015 she reported on her terrible experiences to the Foreign Policy Committee of the US Senate at a meeting on human trafficking. But even then they were almost a decade ago.

Katz was also able to research where Britt had heard the story. Accordingly, in 2023 she attended an event on the border between Texas and Mexico, where Jacinto Romero also spoke. Meanwhile, Britt’s spokesman has also confirmed that the MP was referring to Jacinto Romero. So the fact that she spoke to the victim wasn’t a lie.

Tragic story – unrelated to the USA

The connection with Biden, however, even more so. When Jacinto Romero was kidnapped at the age of twelve, Biden had been a member of parliament for many years, but he only became president almost 20 years later. The kidnapping took place in 2002 and she was released in 2006. The horrific captivity took place entirely during George W. Bush’s presidency. However, he cannot be held responsible either: the minors’ martyrdom took place exclusively in their home country of Mexico.

However, Britt handled the speech deftly. Of course, she knows that her story had no connection to the Biden administration – and therefore doesn’t claim that literally. In her speech, she builds the connection indirectly: She says that she visited the border and spoke to a victim – which is demonstrably true. She then goes into detail about the terrible fate of Jacinto Romero. And ultimately emphasizes that the USA must do more to prevent such crimes within its own borders – which the Biden administration is not doing enough. The connection with the current president is only made in the listener’s head.
