Reports from South Korea: North Korea fires another missile

As of: 10/19/2021 7:17 a.m.

A defense fair was opened in South Korea, while missile tests were carried out again in North Korea. According to South Korean information, the country shot a projectile towards the sea.

According to the South Korean military, North Korea tested a missile again – during the opening of the ADEX International Aviation and Defense Exhibition in Seoul, South Korea.

The chief of staff announced that a previously unidentified projectile had been fired off the east coast near the city of Sinpo. North Korea has its base in Sinpo for submarines and equipment for the test launch of ballistic submarine missiles.

The Japanese Coast Guard issued a security warning to ships but did not comment on exactly where the missile landed.

Missile launch during a secret service meeting

The launch of the rocket took place during a meeting of the intelligence chiefs of the USA, South Korea and Japan as part of ADEX in Seoul, where the stalemate with North Korea was to be discussed, among other topics, reported the South Korean news agency Yonhap, citing government circles.

The recent rocket launch is exacerbating tensions on the peninsula and stalling denuclearization talks with the United States. The West wants North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile arsenals. The leadership in Pyongyang is pressing for relief in the US sanctions against the communist country.

US government wants diplomatic talks

Just hours before the latest test, the US had reiterated its offer to resume diplomatic talks on the North Korean nuclear weapons program. US President Joe Biden’s Special Envoy for North Korea, Sung Kim, is due to hold talks with US allies in Seoul over the next few days about the prospect of such a resumption of talks with the Pyongyang government. The North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un has so far rejected the offers of the US government Biden to resume the dialogue.

Most recently, North Korea had apparently successfully tested a hypersonic missile after a long break in September. If the North Korean information is correct, the country would have reached another stage in upgrading its arsenal. Hypersonic missiles are extremely fast and flexible, which makes their destruction by missile defense systems very difficult.
