Rent index becomes mandatory: can the reform slow down rent increases? – Your SZ

It is like a nightmare for many tenants and apartment seekers: rents have risen rapidly in numerous German cities in recent years, especially when properties have been re-let. Every year landlords send out two million rent increases, which they justify with the increase in the local comparative rent or modernization. According to the German Tenants’ Association, more than a third of these rent increases are “inadmissible, incorrect or simply too high”. The federal government now wants to create more legal certainty with the so-called Rent Index Reform Act. The law went into effect on July 1. What it will and should bring to tenants and landlords – a handout.
