Last year, trainees earned an average of four figures per month for the first time. However, there are large differences in income between occupations.

According to an evaluation by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB), the income of trainees increased significantly last year. On average, trainees in collective bargaining companies earned over 1000 euros over all training years for the first time.

Loss of wages after deducting inflation

The average income was 1029 euros in the west and 1012 euros in the east. Overall, remuneration increased by 4.2 percent, after 2.5 percent in the previous year. Due to the high inflation, however, the trainees still had to accept real wage losses.

Depending on the training occupation, there are clear differences in remuneration. Trainees in the carpenter profession earned the most with 1254 euros per month. Prospective bricklayers, pipeworkers and merchants in the banking and insurance sector also received above-average apprenticeship wages.

Painters and bakers continue to be poorly paid

On the other hand, trainees who want to become painters, bakers, chimney sweeps or hairdressers were poorly paid. They received remuneration of 850 euros or less. The profession of orthopedic shoemaker brought up the rear. At 652 euros, trainees earned the least here.
