Regensburg: When the Rumkrapfen was canceled – Bavaria

At the beginning of the year, most people throw away the last leftovers of gingerbread because they can no longer stand the orange peel, cloves and cinnamon, which is completely clear if you have been eating them morning, lunch and evening since the end of the summer holidays. And because the old addiction has to be replaced by a new one, bakeries start producing carnival donuts at the beginning of January at the latest.

A traditional Upper Palatinate bakery had the sad experience that things and tastes sometimes change and that the rum donut, which was also traditional, was no longer as popular as it once was. He took it out of the range. And the drama began, because at the same time a few people complained on Facebook that there was real rum in the rum doughnuts.

In times of analog cheese, you can be amazed that there is actually real alcohol in a pastry and not just cheap flavoring. One would think so. Some other commenters on Facebook didn’t like it, the normal ones, the ones with common sense. It probably wouldn’t have helped to point out that there was an alcoholic alternative all along for those who consider Dry January to be a very personal frontal attack: the eggnog doughnut.

Shortly before the carnival home stretch in Bavaria, the drama was averted: “He’s back!”, “Rumkrapfen comeback”, “The Rumkrapfen is saved!”, “Rumkrapfen are available again in ALL our branches !” is what the local press says.

The other real people came up with the idea that the master baker might have initially taken the donut out of the range because demand had fallen drastically, i.e. because his completely normal customers might have preferred to try the hundred other types of donuts, which are also extremely good Normal people with common sense probably don’t on Facebook at first.

No! The poor donut was canceled by nasty bad guys! Just like the Leberkäss roll, the roast pork, sausages, sausage spreads and Pressack! Are you crazy!?

It’s working again. Because normal people have left their permanent residence on Facebook and gone to the branches of the traditional bakery to ask for the rum doughnut. When ordinary people come together with a desire for real rum in lard biscuits that they’ve never had before, they can make a difference.

And so the rum donut celebrated its brilliant comeback just in time for the high donut sales of the carnival. You could also call it capitalism. Or common sense.
