Refugees from Ukraine: Municipalities and districts are asking for help

Status: 03/14/2022 12:59 p.m

So far, Germany has registered around 147,000 refugees from Ukraine. Counties and municipalities are asking for support in distributing and caring for people. Green party leader Haßelmann proposes a summit.

The number of refugees from Ukraine registered in Germany has risen to around 147,000. By Monday, 146,989 people had been recorded by the federal police, said a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Berlin. Since there are no controls at the border with Poland and people with Ukrainian passports can enter the EU without a visa, the actual number is probably higher.

Haßelmann: Summit should coordinate

The leader of the Greens parliamentary group, Britta Haßelmann, therefore sees the need for a summit on how to deal with the Ukrainian war refugees. “It is now important that the federal, state, local authorities, welfare organizations and aid organizations advise which aid and support must be provided for the near future and which needs must be covered,” said Haßelmann of the dpa.

In Germany, aid organizations, rescue services, employees of THW, initiatives, railways, government agencies and civil society would do everything they could to take in and support refugees from Ukraine, Haßelmann continued. “The willingness to help is very great. We can be very happy about that.”

Counties want equal distribution

The district council demands an even distribution of war refugees throughout Germany in order to prevent individual districts and cities from being overburdened. The number of refugees is increasing significantly, said President Reinhard Sager of the “Rheinische Post”. “That’s why the quick assistance of the districts is one thing, a resilient longer-term perspective is another.” In due course, the topic of costs will also have to be discussed with the federal and state governments.

Berlin asks for Bundeswehr help

The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Franziska Giffey, asked for support during a visit to an emergency shelter for Ukrainian refugees: “We need help. We suspect that what we are seeing now is just the beginning.”

Everyone would therefore have to be more coordinated in the coming days and weeks – a call for help to the federal government. Berlin’s Senator for Social Affairs, Katja Kipping, said that Berlin was putting together as much as all other federal states.

Mayor Giffey calls for the Bundeswehr – but so far they have been silent. The head of the Bundeswehr Association Andre Wüstner said on “Welt-TV”: “What else should we do?” The reality is that the Bundeswehr is neglecting the actual tasks of the Bundeswehr due to the permanent administrative assistance that has been provided for years, whether with Corona, flood aid or other crises. “It can’t go on like this,” says Wüstner.
