In its latest study, the consumer association Familles Rurales observes that inflation has particularly affected the food sector. For this study, the association took prices on 83 frequently consumed products in February, April, June and October 2023 in 153 stores in 41 departments. “All the foods in our basket have increased, but three items have experienced particularly marked inflation, above 18% in 2023: sweet products, fats and especially dairy products,” according to the Observatory.
810 euros per month for an “economic” basket
Worse, “many products that are healthy for our health” are particularly affected by inflation, with double-digit price increases, according to the Observatory. Still spared in 2022, in 2023 many healthy products for our health will be even more affected by the average increase. “+40.6% for carrots, +24.8% for mackerel, +23.2% for semi-skimmed milk, +21% for olive oil or even +20.4% for rice,” observes the association. The average monthly price of our “varied” basket for a family of four people amounts to 810 euros for an “economic” basket, 901 euros for that made up of national brands and 1,297 euros for organic. Finally, to have a balanced diet that corresponds to the recommendations of the PNNS (national nutrition and health plan), a family made up of two adults and two children must spend 539 euros each month.
Twice as expensive in Overseas Territories
The Observatory also denounces the difficult situation in Overseas France where with “much lower incomes”, inflation is “just as marked as in France”, with “products costing up to twice as much”. more expensive.” A median income 20% lower for Guadeloupe, 23% for Martinique, 33% for Reunion and up to six times lower for Mayotte, according to the association.
