It is considered the art world’s barometer of fame – the “Art Compass”, which has been published for over half a century. The man at the top has always been the same for a long time.

The painter Gerhard Richter (90) continues to be listed as the world’s most important artist in the “Kunstkompass” ranking. For 20 years now, the Cologne-based judge has held the undisputed top position in the ranking, which has existed for more than half a century.

The next ranks are also unchanged: the US remains in second place.Artist Bruce Nauman, followed by the two Germans Georg Baselitz and Rosemarie Trockel.

The “Art Compass” is created annually by the journalist Linde Rohr-Bongard from Cologne and appears in the magazine “Capital”. Exhibitions from almost 300 museums, reviews in specialist magazines, purchases from leading museums and awards are evaluated and weighted with points. However, sales prices and auction proceeds are not taken into account.
