The new Brennen Base Tunnel is intended to facilitate freight and travel traffic between Munich and Verona. Now there has been a fatal accident at the construction site.

A technician from Upper Bavaria was killed in a train accident on a construction site for the Brenner Base Tunnel. As the Austrian police announced on Friday, the 57-year-old had been doing survey work in a construction phase in the Innsbruck area the day before. At the same time, a transport train drove through the main tunnel and hit the man. An emergency doctor who was alerted could only determine that the victim was dead.

“All of us on the Construction site are deeply affected by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and our sympathy are with the family and relatives,” said the Brenner Base Tunnel Company (BBT SE). The surveying technician from the Erding district worked for a subcontractor. The public prosecutor’s office ordered an autopsy.

According to the BBT, the 36 meter long train is used to transport materials and workers to the tunnel boring machine. According to police, it was driven by a 51-year-old driver. At 64 kilometers, the longest railway tunnel in the world with two main tubes is intended to facilitate freight and travel traffic between Munich and Verona. According to current plans, the tunnel is scheduled to go into operation in 2032.
