Our author was at the large Munich demonstration against right-wing extremism on Sunday and wonders what has become of Germany, the country that she values and loves so much.
A proverb from the Acholi tribe of northern Uganda says: “A single frog can spoil the stream.” In fact, the wonderful diversity of this country is slowly being damaged by rising right-wing extremists. It’s really hard to believe, especially since this country carries with it the memories of the brutal Nazi regime. When I came to this country as a refugee about ten years ago, I came because it presented itself to me as one of the freest democracies in the world. Because people here are dealing with the bad political past. In the meantime I ask myself: What has become of this Germany that I value and love so much?
