Quarter-finals at the US Open: Zverev completely exhausted in a heat battle | Sports

In the end the power was gone!

Alexander Zverev (26) is with the US Open eliminated in quarterfinals. Against the world number one Carlos Alcaraz (20) it was clearly 3: 6, 2: 6, 4: 6.

Small consolation: From Monday, Zverev will definitely be back in the top 10 in the world.

It was clearly noticeable that the Olympic champion had been on the pitch six hours longer than the Spaniard in the first four laps. Add to that the tropical, muggy and hot temperatures of over 30 degrees, even late in the evening. He was just floored. Understandable!

The external conditions already made things difficult for the Hamburger in the five-set thriller against Jannik Sinner (22). The longest match this year in New York at 4:41 hours. 43 hours after the match point, Zverev had to play against Alcaraz again. That’s why he skipped training on Tuesday to regenerate.

chance in the first set

But Zverev also had his chance against the Iberian, at least in the first set. Two missed breakballs at 3: 3 and one or two slight mistakes too many, punished Alcaraz, who still lost his top position again on Monday to Novak Djokovic (36), ice cold.

A break was enough for the young star to win the set 6:3. In the second round he made an early break, which he extended by one more: 6:2. During the break in the set, the two-time world champion left the field, took a medical break and was treated by a physiotherapist.

That seemed to help because Zverev was able to finish. The defending champion even got into trouble briefly when the German had two break points at the beginning of the set. Ultimately, however, Alcaraz managed to take the serve from Zverev at 4: 4 – the decision.

A few minutes later, after 2:30 hours, Alcaraz converted his first match point to 6: 4. His opponent in the semifinals on Friday (local time) is the Russian Daniil Medvedev (27), who also clearly defeated his compatriot Andrey Rublev (25) in three sets.

Zverev is going home to Monaco for four days, then on to Mostar, where he will play the relegation duel against Bosnia-Herzegovina with the DTB team in the Davis Cup on September 16th and 17th.
