Pushed by its Prime Minister, Luxembourg could return to Eurovision in 2024

Luxembourg has not participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1993. Its return to the musical competition has long been an Arlesian but it could materialize as early as the 2024 edition.

Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister and Minister of the Media of the Grand Duchy launched a discussion on this point in the Council of Government, reports the Luxembourg site RTL this Thursday.

The question of cost, long evoked to justify the refusal to return to Eurovision, no longer seems to be an obstacle. The State, nestled on the borders of France, Belgium and Germany, believes that reappearing on the competition scene would have a positive impact that would allow a return on investment.

RTL Television, member ofEuropean Broadcasting Union (EBU, the entity that manages the organization of the competition), announces that it has been contacted in this regard. If participation in Eurovision 2024 was confirmed, it could be the broadcaster and would be responsible for selecting the artist called to represent the country of 645,400 inhabitants.

Five wins

Xavier Bettel will personally follow the file. He will head a working group in which Sam Tanson, Minister of Justice, and Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign Affairs will take part.

Luxembourg is one of the seven founding countries of the Eurovision Song Contest. In 37 appearances, he won five times. In 1961, with We lovers by Jean-Claude Pascal, in 1965 with Wax doll, sound doll of France Gall, in 1972 and 1973 respectively with After you by Vicky Leandros and You will recognize you by Anne-Marie David, and, for the last time, in 1983, with If life is a gift by Corinne Hermes.

Luxembourg overwhelmingly submitted songs in French to the competition, opting only three times for lyrics in Luxembourgish.

He has regularly been represented by artists of other nationalities, including the French Michèle Torr and Hugues Aufray, the Belgians Plastic Bertrand and Lara Fabian, the Spanish duo Baccara, the American Jeane Manson or the Greek Nana Mouskouri.
