Publisher Rudolf Rother Jr. died – Munich

As has now become known about the publisher of the same name, the publisher is Rudolf Rother Jr. died on August 24th. Born in Munich, he founded the company in 1964 from his father and publishing founder Rudolf Rother Sr. taken over and successfully developed further until 1990. Under his leadership, new book series were created, including the very successful hiking guide editions with the characteristic red cover, the first edition of which appeared in 1985. The color is still the publisher’s trademark today.

Rudolf Rother Jr. was a passionate mountaineer and skier himself. Safety on the mountain was a major concern for him both personally and professionally. The series of Alpine club leaders was particularly close to Rother’s heart. With more than 52 titles, it was an important source of information for mountain athletes for decades. After selling his company to the Viennese publishers Freytag & Berndt in 1990, Rother devoted himself entirely to his second great passion, panoramic photography in the Alps. He spared no effort in order to comprehensively photograph the beauty of his beloved mountain world, carrying twelve to 14 kilos of equipment to the peaks. He knew about the problems of the increasing commercialization of the mountains. That frightens him, he once said in an interview. Rudolf Rother Jr. leaves a son and three grandchildren. He was 96 years old.
