A llama stands among the ruins of Machu Picchu and munches in the cold wind. On the horizon, behind densely forested peaks, gray clouds are piling up, a bird of prey is screaming, crickets are chirping. Otherwise: silence. Perhaps it was this tranquility that the Inca rulers had in mind when they built a city here in Peru in the 15th century, on top of a steep mountain, so high that it almost seems to be floating, detached from everything.
