Proposal from the transport company: E-buses should make artificial noise

Status: 05/04/2022 1:28 p.m

Artificial warning noises are mandatory for electric vehicles at low speeds throughout Europe. Now there is also a proposal for a uniform driving noise for e-buses in Germany.

In the future, electric buses in local transport should spread a uniform artificial driving noise. This is recommended by the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) and presented a draft by a sound designer. The member companies should specify this sound in tenders for the purchase of new buses.

E-bus sound for Germany

Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), May 4, 2022 1:49 p.m

“It’s partly a curse that the buses are so quiet,” said Association Vice President Werner Overkamp. The vehicles are difficult to perceive for people who see or hear poorly.

Warning sounds mandatory throughout Europe

Artificial warning noises at low speeds have been mandatory for new electric vehicles throughout Europe since last summer, as they make hardly any noise when driving slowly or when stationary.

The VDV had launched a student competition to submit sound ideas for Germany’s e-bus sound of the future. Because according to the EU standard, e-buses are too quiet to be noticed in good time at low speeds outdoors.

According to its own statements, the industry association consulted with affected associations, the TÜV, the Federal Environment Agency and the Road Safety Council for its proposal.
