Prada at the weekly market? When you think of the Italian luxury brand dent, the first thing that comes to mind is expensive fashion. In Shanghai, however, that is likely to have changed.

The Italian luxury brand Prada has taken over an ordinary market in Shanghai for an advertising campaign.

At the Wuzhong market in the port city, there were vegetables, fruit or meat and flowers in paper or bags in Prada design until Sunday. The fashion brand had made the specially printed packaging material available to the market stalls free of charge.

The two-week campaign under the motto “Feels like Prada” met with mixed reactions, especially from dealers and regular visitors, as thousands of fashion-conscious young people flooded the market, mostly just to take selfies and post them on social media. Some commented on their photos as “the most fashionable market” or “it’s the only one from Prada I can afford”.

Many didn’t even buy anything. Some traders were annoyed because the trendy visitors were disrupting normal business or touching the vegetables for photos. In Chinese media reports, a social researcher called the advertising campaign “Invasion of consumer behavior into everyday life”.
