An important innovation in the Danish royal family: Prince Christian of Denmark can now officially represent Queen Margrethe II.

Prince Christian of Denmark (18) was given a special honor this Tuesday (November 14th). The 18-year-old signed a declaration of commitment to comply with the constitution at a meeting of the State Council at Christiansborg Palace and can now represent his grandmother Queen Margrethe II (83) and his father Crown Prince Frederik (55) if they are unable to attend. His mother Crown Princess Mary (51), Margrethe’s sister Princess Benedikte (79) and Margrethe’s son Prince Joachim (54) can also take on the official duties as temporary head of state.

The signed declaration by Prince Christian became a special event because, for the first time in more than 100 years, the situation arises in which both an heir to the throne and his successor can take the place of regent. The last time this was the case was in 1902, as the Danish royal family announced.

To mark the occasion, new pictures were published showing Prince Christian with his parents and Queen Margrethe II as well as members of the government. Photos from the signing location were also shared, showing Christian, among other things, with his father and the Queen.

The prince celebrated his 18th birthday on October 15th. He is the eldest son of the crown prince couple and occupies second place in the Danish throne. He has three siblings, Princess Isabella (16), Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (both 12).
