Price of electricity, gas, tolls, savings… on February 1, here’s what changes on a daily basis
FRANCE – Increases, decreases and new developments to be expected for February. Increase in the price of electricity, decrease in the price of gas, increase in the toll price… As on the first of every month, HuffPost takes stock of the changes to be expected from this Thursday, February 1.
An increase in electricity between 8.6% and 9.8% for most French people
The Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire announced on January 21 that the electricity bill would increase from this Thursday by less than 10% for the vast majority of French people, but not all, in accordance with the government’s commitment to exit expensive “tariff shield”.
“The electricity bill on peak/off-peak rates will increase by 9.8% on February 1 and on base rates by 8.6%. That is to say that for 97% of French households the increase will be below 10%”, declared the minister. This concerns nearly 20 million households subscribing to electricity, including 10.6 million at the base rate, i.e. the rate ” blue “ from EDF, fixed without off-peak hours.
For approximately 400,000 individual subscribers who have subscribed to a so-called option “peak day cancellation”, the price will increase by 10.1%. For small businesses and non-residential subscribers, the increase will be 5.2 to 8% depending on the contracts.
The price of gas towards a further decline
For their part, gas prices should trend downward from this Thursday, for the second consecutive month in France. Since July 1, the regulated sales prices (TRV) of gas have disappeared and since then the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has published its price every month “landmark”.
However, the CRE announced that this famous price would decrease in February 2024. Concretely, a household which uses gas for hot water and cooking should pay on average in February 0.12144 euros per kWh, compared to 0.13244 euros in last January, calculate Capital. Homes heating exclusively with gas will have to pay on average 0.09851 euros per kWh, compared to 0.10950 euros in January 2024.
Toll prices up 3% on average
Motorway toll rates will increase on February 1. The price of the toll ticket will increase by 2.71% for the concessionary companies of the Vinci group, by 2.79% for Sanef, by 3.02% for APRR and 3.04% for AREA and by 3.08 % for SAPN.
The annual increase in motorway tolls traditionally occurs every February 1st. At the end of November Clément Beaune, then Minister Delegate for Transport, assured that it would be “less than 3%” on average in 2024.
In addition to inflation, which reached 3.87% over the reference period (12 rolling months ending at the end of October 2023), the increase in motorway tariffs is calculated on the basis of the investment plans of the concession companies.
The rate of popular savings accounts falling
The rate of remuneration of the Popular Savings Booklet goes from 6 to 5% on February 1, indicates the site of the Ministry of the Economy. According to Bruno Le Maire, this rate “ should have fallen to 4.4% “, but the minister decided to block it at this ” exceptional rate on the savings market “.

Salary increase for VTC
