A team of scientists from Harvard University analyzed in their study Using nutritional questionnaires and death certificates, the connection between diet and dementia-related deaths, such as Central German Broadcasting (MDR) reported. The data was collected from more than 90,000 U.S. residents over a period of three decades. Of the participants, a total of 4,749 people died of dementia.

When analyzing the information about the participants’ diet, it was ultimately shown that the risk of dementia-related death is around 30 percent lower for people who eat more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day than for people who never or rarely consume olive oil. In addition, people who replace a teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil every day still have an eight to 14 percent lower risk of dying from dementia.

Olive oil promotes a healthy brain – regardless of other diet

The study found the connection between olive oil and dementia mortality regardless of other diet. The researchers therefore suspect that certain properties of olive oil have a positive effect on the brain. According to first author Anne-Julie Tessier, “some antioxidant compounds in olive oil could cross the blood-brain barrier and possibly have a direct effect on the brain.” It is also possible that olive oil has an indirect influence on brain health by promoting cardiovascular health.
