Presidential murder in Haiti: more suspects arrested

Following the murder of Haiti’s President Moïse, six other suspects have been arrested, according to the UN. In addition, a larger group of possible perpetrators fled to two houses and were surrounded by the police.

After the murder of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse in the capital Port-au-Prince, according to the United Nations, other suspects were surrounded by emergency services. “I know that a large group of possible perpetrators have fled to two houses in the city and have now been surrounded by the police,” said UN special envoy Helen La Lime. There are also reports that six suspects have been arrested.

Initially, it was said that four alleged perpetrators were killed and two arrested. The chief of the national police, Léon Charles, had said of the fugitive suspects: “We pursue them until they are either killed in an exchange of fire or we arrest them.” Three police officers who had been taken hostage were released. The police did not provide any information on the identity of the alleged attackers or possible motives for the crime.

All parties should “keep calm”

The members of the UN Security Council in New York unanimously demanded that all parties “keep calm, exercise restraint” and “avoid any action that could contribute to further instability”.

Moïse was shot dead in his home in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday night. His wife Martine, who was injured in the attack, was flown to Miami for treatment. She is out of danger, said Prime Minister Claude Joseph. Your condition is “stable”.
