Powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan, tsunami warning in Japan

A major earthquake was recorded early on Wednesday April 3 in Taiwan. Waves three meters high or more are feared in Okinawa, Japan.

The earth shook. A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded on the island of Taiwan on Wednesday April 3, the Japanese Meteorological Agency announced. A tsunami warning has been issued in Okinawa, southwest of the Japanese archipelago.

“Evacuate to higher areas”

Waves three meters high or more are feared in Okinawa. “Evacuate to higher areas, do not turn around,” recommended a presenter from the Japanese public channel NHK, cited by AFP.

A tsunami warning was also issued for coastal areas in Taiwan

According to initial information, the quake took place around 8 a.m. local time (2 a.m. in Paris) just a few kilometers south of Hualian, east of Taiwan. The American Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that the earthquake was of magnitude 7.4.

This source indicates that an aftershock of magnitude 6.5 was recorded fifteen minutes after the first tremor.
