The social medicine specialist Gerhard Trabert finds that poverty is the worst form of violence – and criticizes Christian Lindner and Federal President Steinmeier. A conversation about what happens when people have nothing left to lose.

Gerhard Trabert, 66, knows poverty in Germany from a practical and scientific perspective. With his “Doctor’s Mobile”, a mobile consulting room, the emergency doctor from Mainz takes care of homeless people, even if they don’t have health insurance. He holds a professorship for social medicine and social psychiatry at the Rhein-Main University of Applied Sciences. Trabert is not a member of the left, but the party has nominated him as a candidate twice: for the 2021 federal election and for the election of the federal president in early 2022. Trabert was not elected both times. In the SZ interview, he not only called for more determination in the fight against poverty from the federal government, but also from Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the left.
