Potentially carcinogenic! Don’t eat fruitcake

Rewe calls back a fruit bread. A questionable substance has been detected in one of its ingredients. You can read here which batches of bread are affected by the recall.

The Emil Reimann company is recalling a fruit bread. Several batches of “Original Dresdner Fruchtbrot, 500g”, which was sold in Rewe branches, are affected. Reason for the recall: According to a report, small residues of 2-chloroethanol have been detected in the cinnamon used for the bread. This is a breakdown product of the pesticide ethylene oxide. The manufacturer warns that a health hazard cannot be ruled out if the affected products are consumed.

The fabric ethylene oxide can cause cancer and is genotoxic, so it can change the genetic material. In food production in Europe, the halogen compound has therefore been banned for years.
