“Zerreißprobe” is the name of a performance by Günter Brus from 1970 – women’s underwear, razor blades, self-mutilation, lots of blood. Even by the standards of Viennese Actionism, the work is considered drastic. But when applied to Berlin conditions, where this is what the new presentation of post-war art in the National Gallery is now called, “Order to Tear” is a case of: The other way around it becomes an even bigger shoe. Because there is no lack of turmoil here from the start.
