If apartments are empty for more than three months because they are rented out for commercial purposes or as holiday homes, this is more than just a nuisance given the housing shortage in Munich. That’s why, despite the difficult legal framework, the social affairs department is consistently taking action against it – with increasing success: Last year, with 465 apartments, the city was able to return more apartments to their actual purpose than ever before in a year: use as living space. In the past ten years, the city has saved a total of 3,417 apartments from illegal misuse.
