Portions of highway become free for motorcycles this weekend

They often annoy motorists by going up the lines of cars at red lights or in traffic jams. Bikers will still have reason to be jealous this Ascension weekend, since certain sections of the motorway will become free for them, as pointed out RMC. A privilege ? Not really.

The event, organized on the occasion of the French motorcycle Grand Prix on the Bugatti circuit in Le Mans, is mainly focused on prevention. For several years, the Fédération des Motards en Cère (FFMC) has been carrying out a series of actions on this occasion, including the establishment of “calm biker relays” for two-wheel drivers. At these relays, installed in rest areas or supermarket car parks, they can find drinks distributed, technical assistance, road information, cleaning or even small first aid courses.

The highway “five times safer” for bikers

“Large motorcycle events generate significant flows of motorized two-wheeler traffic. Group travel can surprise motorists who are not necessarily used to managing cohabitation with a large number of motorcyclists. As for the latter, fatigue due to great distances can alter reflexes and reduce alertness,” explains the FFMC.

The aim is also to encourage motorcyclists who come to attend the Grand Prix to take the motorway, “5 times safer on average than other road infrastructures” for them. And Vinci Autoroutes, partner of the “calmos biker relay” operation, is playing the game by making portions of the highways leading to Le Mans free.

In detail, the portions concerned are: the A11 between the Saint-Arnoult toll and Le Mans, and between Angers and Le Mans; the A28 between Saint-Christophe-sur-le-Nais and Le Mans, between Alençon and Le Mans, and between Rouen and Alençon; the A81 between Le Mans and La Gravelle; the A85 between Angers and Restigné. All this from Friday to Monday May 13 at 10 a.m.
