Pope Francis wants to be buried like every Christian – not lavishly like his predecessors. In addition, his body should not rest in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis wants to be buried more modestly than his predecessors. To do this, he had the mourning ceremonies changed, according to a volume of interviews that will be published in Spanish on Wednesday. The 87-year-old head of the Catholic Church announced that after his death he wanted to be laid out in a coffin – and no longer lying exposed on a catafalque, i.e. a platform, like all his recent predecessors.

The farewell should be done “with dignity,” said the Pope. But he wanted to be treated “like any Christian.” Francis also confirmed that he does not want to be buried in St. Peter’s Basilica, but in another church in Rome, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Pope Francis doesn’t want a wake like Benedict XVI.

The pontiff reported that he had the ritual for the burial of popes simplified overall. For example, there will no longer be a special ceremony to close the coffin in the future. Francis remembered the funeral of the German Pope Benedict XVI. after his death on New Year’s Eve 2022. “This will be the last wake celebrated in this way, with the Pope’s body outside the coffin on a catafalque. I have spoken to the master of ceremonies and we have abolished this and many other things . The previous ritual was too overloaded.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI – whose real name was Joseph Ratzinger – was laid out in the chapel of the Mater Ecclesiae monastery on a catafalque, a specially built structure. He wore a red liturgical robe and a miter as a head covering. He held a rosary in his folded hands. Benedict was buried in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, like his predecessors John Paul II, John Paul I and Paul VI.

However, Francis – whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio – wants to be laid to rest in Santa Maria Maggiore, a few kilometers away outside the walls of the Vatican. There is a room there where the candelabra have previously been stored. “This is the place,” said the pontiff. “You confirmed to me that everything is ready.” Several popes are already buried in the basilica.

For the book “El Sucesor” (“The Successor”), Francis was interviewed by the Vatican correspondent of the Spanish newspaper ABC, Javier Martínez-Brocal.
