Over the weekend, he appeared on screens for many: Pope Francis in a white down coat, the kind hip-hop stars like to wear and clergymen don’t like to wear. It appeared on Friday on a subpage of the social news aggregator Reddit, from where the image quickly spread thousands of times as a meme on Reddit, Instagram and Twitter. British author Nick Pettigrew quipped the line “Priest 17” because it was from the boy band east 17 there is a photo in such white down coats. The group’s lead singer-songwriter Tony Mortimer responded with the line “Pray Another Day” (Mortimer had written the number one hit “Stay Another Day”). But the real joke was that a lot of people believed the picture was real.
