Poor hygiene, animal abuse… A slaughterhouse forced to change its activity

The company has been in the sights of the authorities for several years. Regularly singled out for its practices, the AIM slaughterhouse in Antrain (Ille-et-Vilaine) has received numerous formal notices since 2020 for “malfunctions in terms of hygiene and animal protection. »

Despite calls to order, the situation has hardly improved over the years with dysfunctions “increasingly frequent due to the absence of structural investments”, underlines the prefecture of Ille-et- Ugly.

A grant of 1.6 million euros never used

In 2021, the company received a subsidy of 1.6 million euros as part of the France Relance plan to comply and modernize. Credits which the shareholders of the slaughterhouse have not touched to date, which led the authorities to issue a temporary order on slaughtering at the end of September.

This decision did not take long to react to the company’s management, which decided “to stop slaughtering to lead a reconversion of the site towards a meat cutting activity”, specify the authorities. Bought in 2019 by the Belgian group Sopraco, the AIM company employs 80 employees on its Antrain site.
