Podcast “Munich personally”: What holds Munich together at its core, Professor Bloch? – Munich

Immanuel Bloch is an extremely diligent scientist. He publishes so many new findings that he is traded as a candidate for the Nobel Prize. Bloch’s domain is quantum research, i.e. the part of physics that deals with the behavior of the smallest particles and in which huge leaps in technology are expected in the next few years. What may soon be possible with quantum technology: Bloch explains this in the SZ podcast “Munich personally” – and he tells how he discovered his fascination with physics and why he has so far turned down offers to teach at Stanford or Yale.

Bloch, who was born in Fulda in 1972, has two jobs in Munich: one in Garching, where he works as a director at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and one in Schellingstrasse, at the Faculty of Physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University , where he holds a professorship. What he experiences in terms of change in the university district and among the students – he also talks about that on a walk through Maxvorstadt.

For the podcast of the Munich editorial team, the People editor Sabine Buchwald, the social editor Jana Jöbstl and Ulrike Heidenreich and René Hofmann, the heads of the Munich, Region and Bavaria departments, alternately meet with very different guests. They pick them up at their place of residence or their place of work and accompany them on their personal route. Sometimes by tram, bus, subway or S-Bahn, a taxi or even on foot.

It’s about current projects and very personal plans, about topics that move the city. The SZ podcast team invites people who have a connection to Munich. You live in the city or you are visiting. They come from the fields of politics, gastronomy, culture, sports or media.
