Install plants around the pool
The plants will bring the final touch to your garden and allow the enhancement of your swimming pool. In addition, you can use it to hide less attractive elements such as a barrier, a technical room, etc.
However, it is recommended to leave a distance of at least 1.50 meters between the swimming pool and the plants. In this way, you limit the constraints of cleaning your swimming pool. And for good reason, the closer the vegetation is to the basin, the more leaves, flowers, etc. risk falling into it. This is the reason why it is preferable to respect this minimum distance. If you opt for trees, make sure that they do not bring excess shade to the pool.
Before you start, it’s best to decide what plants you want and try to think about the layout on paper to get a clear idea of the result. The plan should, as far as possible, be to scale and take into account the size of the plants.
What plants around a swimming pool?
The criteria to be taken into account:
- As your swimming pool will be or is installed in a sunny space, you must turn to plants that are not afraid of the sun or drought.
- It is necessary to choose resistant plants. Indeed, the chemicals present in your swimming pool do not mix well with the vegetation.
- Finally, when choosing your plants, take into account the type of soil on your land, but also the climate of the region.
- For trees, determine the prevailing winds. This way you will set up the tree so that the leaves are going in the opposite direction to the pool. For simplicity, choose plants that do not lose their thorns or leaves as well as those with superficial roots that do not risk damaging the terrace or the swimming pool.
The provence cypress
This conical-shaped conifer thrives in full sun and is very hardy. It can be installed as an isolated subject or in a hedge, in a pot or in the ground.
Bougainvillea
Exposed to full sun, you will enjoy its beautiful colorful bloom. However, it is not frost resistant, so it is reserved for regions with milder winters.
The Palm tree
The palm tree is one of the classics to install around a swimming pool. It brings an exotic side. In addition, it has different species, so you can choose it according to the climate, the space you have and your tastes.
Bamboo
Again, you will have the choice between different species that will allow you to enjoy different height, colors and foliage. It requires little maintenance and is resistant to cold.
Purple cordyline
Bring graphics and exoticism with this plant with purple foliage. Rather rustic, it supports temperatures down to about -8 °.
Sagebrush tree
Its silvery color makes this evergreen shrub a very decorative element. In summer and fall, it is covered with small bright yellow flowers.
Hibiscus

Star jasmine
Star jasmine is a trellis shrub that thrives in full sun. Rustic, it should however be protected from drafts. Star jasmine will allow you to enjoy a beautiful flowering from June to September.
Hydrangea
With these beautiful flowers that will delight you all summer long, it is rather easy to maintain. However, it prefers rather cool soil. This is why it is recommended to plant it in a space in partial shade.
Mexican orange
This Mexican shrub gives off a strong scent and is covered with lovely white flowers from spring until the end of summer. It is not very hardy, so depending on your region, you may need to protect it from a wintering veil. You can also install it away from a wall.
Boxwood
This evergreen shrub stays green all year round. It is rather slow growing and easy to grow. It will please whatever the exposure.
Agapanthus
This very pretty perennial will offer you a summer flowering of a very beautiful blue. She likes the sun and tolerates frost, as long as the winter is not too cold. However, in regions that are a little cold, it is better to plant it in the fall to give it time to harden before the frosts.
