After it became known at the end of last year that Berlin was planning a monument to the history of guest workers in the Kreuzberg district, the city of Dortmund has now also initiated a similar process. That makes perfect sense, because in Berlin-Kreuzberg as well as in Dortmund and other cities in the Ruhr area, the waves of immigration through the recruitment agreements have, among other things, led to a society that is so naturally diverse that these multi-ethnic and intercultural local identities are hardly questioned anymore . But that doesn’t mean that the path to such a monument will be easy.
