Photo art: Jeff Wall exhibition in Riehen near Basel – Culture

He was staging photos long before anyone else was doing it. And he is the great realist among contemporary photographers: Jeff Wall. The Canadian, born in 1946, doesn’t bother with small formats; his works, often mounted in large light boxes, are made for museum walls. There they are now hanging in the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, selected and hung by the curator Martin Schwander and Jeff Wall himself. Which tells a lot about what is important to the artist and why. He only created around 200 works; 55 of them can be seen. Unfortunately, the artist-curator also explains his works himself in the catalogue, apparently he doesn’t like to leave anything to chance when it comes to interpretation.
