New task for the CDU politician Philipp Amthor: He is to become his party’s member representative. It’s part of a remarkable comeback.

Philipp Amthor is to become the CDU’s new member representative. He found out star from CDU circles. When asked, the 31-year-old member of the Bundestag confirmed that he will run for office at the federal party conference in Berlin at the beginning of May. There are no opposing candidates so far.

“It’s not about a new position, I already have plenty of that,” Amthor told the star. Rather, the candidacy arose from his intensive work on the new CDU basic program. “In my new role, I could certainly contribute to ensuring that our party base regularly gives us further substantive impulses even after the new CDU basic program has been adopted. Because there is a lot of expertise and undiscovered treasures there.”

Specifically, Amthor envisages, among other things, regularly communicating “key questions” on current topics – such as the future of the pension system or migration – to the grassroots for discussion in regional CDU associations and using the feedback as a “seismograph for federal politics”. This could also be done in the form of a competition: “Which associations are the most active? Which ideas are the most creative?”

Is the classic get-together for basic work a discontinued model? No, says Amthor: “Local regulars’ meetings must continue to exist, but many members join the CDU not only because of regular meetings, but above all because of political content. We want to create even better and new offers for this.” Digital instruments will also be increasingly used for this purpose.

No event planned with erotic model Schäfer

Amthor is not planning any events with prominent new members such as the erotic model Micaela Schäfer and the actor Julian Stoeckel for the time being: “But I am happy to receive suggestions from all members. And it is also good that we have a diverse membership.”

Member representatives are elected by the party conference and act as contact persons for party members. You report regularly to the board of directors and are also members of it. The post was previously held by Henning Otte, a member of the Bundestag from Lower Saxony. According to his regional association, he is vacating the post for Amthor, but is running as an assessor for the federal executive board.

Otte told the newspaper that he carried out the office “with his heart and soul”. star. Now he is “passing on the baton in the knowledge that we are on a very good path for Germany’s CDU.” In the future, he wants to dedicate himself even more to the “National Security Network”, which he co-founded. This primarily takes care of state and district associations of the CDU in whose area there are large Bundeswehr locations.

After the crash, he showed humility

If Amthor becomes the federal party’s member representative, as expected, this would be part of a spectacular comeback. In 2020, the “Spiegel” reported on the involvement of the CDU’s young star in a lobbying scandal, as a result of which Amthor lost his direct mandate for the Bundestag and forewent a planned candidacy for the CDU state chairmanship in his home association of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Although he returned to the Bundestag via the state list, his career still seemed irreparably damaged. But Amthor was humble and continued to work diligently without higher positions, which was also noticed and liked by party leader Friedrich Merz.

The position of member representative should also be a kind of reward for this. Amthor has also rehabilitated himself in his home association. Here he was elected as the new Secretary General on Saturday.
