Not a rag for a month and a fine: The CDU politician Philipp Amthor was convicted of driving too fast. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
Because of driving too fast, the CDU member of the Bundestag Philipp Amthor is supposed to surrender his driver’s license for a month and pay a fine of 450 euros. The Pasewalk district court sentenced him to do so, as the 29-year-old confirmed to the German press agency on Tuesday evening. The broadcaster NDR 1 Radio MV had previously reported on it. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
According to NDR, the hearing had come because Amthor did not want to accept the fine. The current head of the CDU state group Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Bundestag is said to have driven at around 120 kilometers per hour through a Tempo 70 zone last year.
Philipp Amthor: “Driving too fast is always unnecessary”
“I did not even get involved in the process, but had some legal questions examined by an experienced lawyer,” said Amthor of the dpa. “Of course, I am not claiming any special rights to drive too fast, but it is also not indecent to have a court review a fine. Everyone is entitled to do so. In any case, the following applies: Driving too fast is always unnecessary and should not be put into perspective.”
According to Amthor, the driving ban would only become legally binding if he did not lodge a permissible appeal against the judgment. He is currently examining this. Amthor withdrew his application for the CDU state chairmanship in the summer of 2020 because of a lobby affair. In September, the 29-year-old managed to return to the Bundestag via the state list.
