The Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, announced this Thursday, August 31 in Rouen, several measures concerning caregivers, and health. In particular, she promised several salary increases for caregivers. The Prime Minister also authorizes pharmacists to “prescribe antibiotics” for cystitis – urinary tract infections – and angina, “as soon as he has carried out a test to confirm the bacterial origin” of the disease and an interview with the patient.
A measure demanded by patients and pharmacists
They will thus be able “deliver directly” the antibiotic, for “promote access” to these routine acts of care. “For the past year, we have allowed the delegation of twenty acts. We are going to expand to two everyday diseases”, explained the head of government. Giving pharmacists the possibility of dispensing antibiotics in the event of cystitis or angina, the bacterial origin of which is confirmed by a rapid test, was requested by both patients and pharmacies.
Since the beginning of August already, pharmacists or midwives can prescribe and administer certain vaccines, such as the flu or certain reminders of compulsory vaccines.
“Strengthening relationships of trust between professionals”
This was already possible in pharmacies associated with a nursing home. It will be for all in 2024, once the social security financing law has been passed. “With the ministers, we are convinced that part of the answer is to strengthen the relationships of trust between professionals”, she says.
The measure is not expensive, and is part of the logic of accelerating the sharing of tasks between health professionals. Even if, as doctors point out not without reason, it only happens in one direction. “Pharmacists can perform all vaccinations, but we are not guaranteed the right to keep vaccines in the refrigerators of our practices”, explains in particular the union MG France.
