Petition for the creation of an explicit emoji dedicated to periods

Talking about it is often taboo. In France, around 15.5 million people between the ages of 13 and 50 menstruate, according to a parliamentary report on menstruation, in 2020. This represents, on average, 38 years over a lifetime. On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl, of their rights, on October 11, the association Rules are launching an online petition periodemoji.org, calling for the creation of an explicit emoji dedicated to periods. He would be represented by white panties with a bloodstain. The association, which fights against menstrual precariousness, hopes that with this symbol, the invisibilization of this natural phenomenon will end. Maud Leblon, director of the association International Rules, is the guest of this episode of the podcast “Minute Papillon! “.

“Having simple tools to talk freely about periods”

“It is precisely because we do not represent [la culotte tachée de sang] that we find it dirty, underlines Maud Leblon in this interview. If everyone was used to seeing this, if we talked about it more among ourselves (…), these would probably be less problematic situations. And probably young girls wouldn’t miss school for fear of being confronted with this, having a bloodstain on their pants, having their sports teacher telling them to go and do laps in the stadium, even if it is folded in two. »

“It is very important to make things exist, to have simple tools adapted to young people to speak freely about the rules, and to concretely reduce discrimination,” adds Maud Leblon. Listen to the rest of the exchange with the director of the Basic Rules association in the player above.
