“People will be surprised” with the arrival of parking enforcement cars

This is a little new thing for January. In Rennes, the public highway surveillance officers who were responsible for drawing up reports have disappeared since January 1st. Assigned to new missions within the anti-incivility brigade, they leave their mission of controlling paid parking to cars. As in Lille, Toulouse, Bordeaux or Lyon, Rennes now uses these unmarked vehicles allowing the automated reading of license plates (also called Lapi).

A novelty that could bring big returns this year, according to the metropolis’s forecast budget, which foresees an “exceptional product of 2.2 million euros” for the year 2024 alone. “People will be surprised at the start. You’ll have to get used to it. Then, they will get into the habit of paying at the parking meter,” assures Marie Ducamin.

A 30% fraud rate

The vice-president of Rennes Métropole specifies that the amount of post-parking fees (these are no longer fines) will be paid into her budget. But it is the city of Rennes which collects the money from motorists paying for their parking. The fraud rate is currently estimated at 30%. In Rennes, offenders must pay 24.30 euros in the green zone and 34.20 euros in the red zone. In 2022, post-parking packages brought in 1.9 million euros.

The budget exceeds one billion euros

For the first time in its history, the Rennes metropolis has adopted a forecast budget exceeding one billion euros (1.08 billion to be exact) for the year 2024. Nearly half of this envelope is devoted to mobility and transport. . An increase in taxation on waste treatment will soon be voted on in order to deal with the prolonged shutdown of the Villejean incineration plant.
