Paul Mescal could be starring in the ‘Gladiator’ sequel. Negotiations with the actor are already underway.
“Normal People” star Paul Mescal (26) is said to be negotiating the lead role in Ridley Scott’s (85) sequel to the hit film “Gladiator” (2000). This is reported, among other things, by the US industry portal “Variety”. The 26-year-old actor could slip into the role of Lucius, the son of Lucilla. Connie Nielsen (57) played Lucilla in the original film.
Director Ridley Scott confirmed at the end of 2021 that there was already a script for the sequel and spoke of a “good, logical place” to head for. The filmmaker added at the time that there were enough tie-ins from the first installment to pick up the ball and continue the story. A final draft of the script was reportedly finalized in November 2022, and after “a fantastic meeting” between Scott and Mescal, he is said to be the first choice for the role.
Great success for the original
“Gladiator” celebrated great success in 2000, the film grossed 460 million US dollars (about 430 million euros) worldwide and made leading actor Russell Crowe (58) an international superstar. “Gladiator” won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Rumors of a sequel have been around since 2001.
“Aftersun” star Paul Mescal played after his role in the acclaimed adaptation of Sally Rooney’s (31) novel “Normal People” alongside Olivia Colman (48) in “Woman in the Dark” and with Emily Watson (55) in “God’s Creatures”. He is currently appearing as Stanley in “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the Almeida Theater in London. The 26-year-old will soon be seen in the sci-fi thriller “Foe” alongside Saoirse Ronan (28), the musical “Carmen” and Andrew Haigh’s (49) fantasy drama “Strangers” with Claire Foy (38). .
