Paul Bettany
In “Amadeus” he embodies Mozart’s rival
Paul Bettany takes on an important role in “Amadeus”. He plays Antonio Salieri, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opponent.
He will take on the role of the Italian-Austrian composer and bandmaster Antonio Salieri (1750-1825). It had previously been announced that “The White Lotus” star Will Sharpe (37) would be seen in the leading role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Production for the series, which will be shown on Sky and the streaming service WOW, is scheduled to begin in Hungary this spring.
Envy becomes revenge
The series is an adaptation of the stage play of the same name by Peter Shaffer (1926-2016). The focus is on the rivalry between the two composers. After Amadeus finds an ally in Constanze Weber Mozart, her relationship leads him to the Italian opera star and court composer Antonio Salieri. “As the hero of his own story but the villain of history, Salieri’s envy turns to vindictiveness as he uses every means to hinder Mozart and protect his position in the establishment,” the announcement said. Paul Bettany said in a statement that he “can’t wait to work with Julian Farino, Joe Barton, Sky and Will Sharpe, who in my opinion is undoubtedly the most exciting actor of his generation.”
