An eight-year-old has to continue living without his mother and sister. Both died after the truck accident in Passau on Friday.
After the suspected truck accident in Lower Bavaria An eleven-year-old girl also died from her serious injuries in Passau. The responsible police headquarters announced this on Friday afternoon. The 37-year-old mother had previously died as a result of the accident. Her eight-year-old son was taken to hospital with injuries, as were two women aged 70 and 45.
As reported, on Friday morning around 9:50 a.m. a truck left the road on Bahnhofstrasse in downtown Passau and hit a group of people on the footpath before coming to a stop against a wall. “We are definitely assuming a traffic accident”said a police spokesman after the incident – countering speculation on social networks about an alleged terrorist attack. The exact course of the accident and the reason for leaving the road are now the subject of the investigation. The public prosecutor’s office and an expert were called in.
Consternation after truck accident in Passau
The 63-year-old truck driver was reportedly able to leave the hospital again and was taken into custody by the police, it was said.
The incident in the center of the city of 50,000 residents triggered a large-scale operation by police and rescue workers, and the surrounding area was cordoned off. Several rescue helicopters were in use.
The mayor of Passau, Jürgen Dupper, reacted with deep concern to the accident and its consequences: ““In events like this, our full sympathy goes out to the people affected and their relatives,” wrote the SPD politician. “This accident means the worst possible end to the year 2023.”
