Hong Kong pro-democracy party announces dissolution

The democracy movement in Hong Kong loses one of its most important parties: the “Civic Party” dissolves. It is considered moderate and is particularly popular with the middle class.
One of Hong Kong’s leading pro-democracy parties has dissolved. As Hong Kong media unanimously reported, the “Civic Party” decided to dissolve after a vote.
It had been a long time since there had been any party members who wanted to run for the board.
Several party members have been arrested by authorities since Beijing enacted a controversial security law for Hong Kong in 2020 following ongoing protests and calls for more democracy. The law is used by the government to take massive action against the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. A number of clubs, media and parties critical of Beijing have had to shut down in the last three years.
The citizens’ party, founded in 2006, was one of the most important democratic voices in the financial metropolis. The “Civic Party” was considered moderate and was particularly popular among Hong Kong’s middle class.
